Celebration Meeting of 112^{th Birth Anniversary of CHEN Daisun}

& CHEN Daisun Economics Fund Development Forum

`Celebration Meeting of 112<sup>th Birth Anniversary of CHEN Daisun & CHEN Daisun Economics Fund Development Forum` took place in Taikang Life Conference Hall of School of Economics on 10am. 10th May, 2012. About 120 people including representatives from Tsinghua University and Central University of Finance and Economics etc, relatives of CHEN Daisun, elderly professors plus faculty and students of School of Economics , guests from Peking University Education Foundation and Peking University Press participated in the meeting.</sup>

 

Vice Dean ZHANG Zheng hosted the meeting. Dean SUN Qixiang first made a speech and expressed thanks to guests and faculty & students of the School. She recalled her communication with Mr. CHEN Daisun, and highly evaluated ChEN Daisun`s personal charm, superior teaching art, strict academic attitude and his profound influence on School of Economics . Dean QIAN Yingyi of Tsinghua University School of Economics and Management reviewed the economics discipline growth and important contribution that Chen Daisun had made to Tsinghua University . President of Central University of Finance and Economics, WANG Guangqian, expressed high respect to CHEN Daisun who was a major founder of Central University of Finance and Economics.

 

Former Dean YAN Zhijie, elderly Professor ZHANG Youren, Professor LI Qingyun delivered their speeches and reviewed Chen Daisun`s tuition. They hoped that Chen Daisun`s knowledge and personality could influence new generation of students, and this kind of personality could pass down from generation to generation. Wenhui Daily senior journalist TANG Sifu, and Chair of Academic Committee of School of Economics, PING Xinqiao made speeches on behalf of Chen Daisun`s relatives and students.

 

Chief Editor ZHANG Liming of Peking University Press congratulated the publication of A Festschrift for Chen daisun. Former Dean YAN Zhijie, former Dean LIU Wei, Dean SUN Qixiang, and President of Peking University Press, WANG Mingzhou, presented books to four students of the School.

 

As Deputy Executive Director of CHEN Daisun Economics Fund of Peking University, Dean SUN Qixiang introduced fund committee structure and fund operation to the guests, and extended thanks to alumni`s concern and support of School development. Vice President LIU Wei and Dean SUN Qixiang issued letter of appointment to committee members, and a group photo was taken to mark the occasion.

 

As the closing of the meeting, LIU Wei made the conclusion speech and he hoped that students could learn and develop CHEN Daisun`s strict academic attitude, noble personality, make innovation, and make academic contribution to China` s economics development.

1. About Professor CHEN Daisun

CHEN Daisun (1900.10.20-1997.7.27), born in Minhou County, Fujian Province of China , was a well-known economist and educator.

He was admitted to the Tsinghua School (now Tsinghua University) in 1918 and graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a bachelor degree in 1922. He entered Harvard University Institute in 1922; there he got his Master of Arts in 1924, and received his PHD in Philosophy in 1926. He had served as professor, Dean of Law School and Director of Economics Department of Tsinghua University since he came back to China in 1927. Tsinghua University moved southward during China` s Anti-Japanese War. He then served as the Southwest Associated University professor, and Chair of Department of Economics and Department of Business. From 1945, he had worked in Tsinghua University as professor, Dean of Law School of Director of Economics Department. In 1952, he was the first Vice-President of Central University of Finance and Economics. He started his professorship in Department of Economics of Peking University since 1953; there he had served as Chair of Department of Economics, committee member and vice-chair of Peking University Council.

Chen Daisun had excellent achievement in finance, statistics, international finance, economics theory history, etc. He had cultivated numerous elites for China during his 70-years` teaching in economics, and had formed his economics education theory. Major works and thesis of him includes History of Economics Theories, From Classic Economics School to Marx, Development of Normative Economics, Empirical Economics and Western Capitalist Economics Theories, Modern Western Economics Research and China`s Socialism Economy Modernization, etc. His collection of works includes Anthology of CHEN Daisun, Self-selected Works of CHEN Daisun, and Posthumous Manuscript of CHEN Daisun.

 

2. Introduction of CHEN Daisun Economics Fund, Peking University .

Established in October 1995 by CHEN Daisun`s students and the community, the fund is used for economics science research awards, supporting economics forum and academic exchanges, supporting and developing economics education, economics research related public service activities, publication of CHEN Daisun and other economics predecessors` academic works, and supporting activities that memorialize CHEN Daisun and other economics predecessors, etc.
