From 1984 to 1988, Dr. Schmit was an Assistant Professor of Insurance at the University of South Carolina. She joined the Risk Management and Insurance faculty at the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 1988, ultimately receiving promotions to associate and then full professor. She has served as Chair of the Actuarial Science, Risk Management and Insurance Department, and as Associate Dean for Graduate Programs in the School of Business, as well as numerous other administrative positions in the School. During the academic year 2005-06, Dr. Schmit will be on sabbatical at St. Gallen University, Switzerland and George Washington University in the District of Columbia, US.
Dr. Schmit has been active in professional associations. Since 1997 she has been an academic moderator for the International Insurance Society, and joined the Research Committee of IIS in 1998. Dr. Schmit is a Past-President of the American Risk and Insurance Society as well as the Risk Theory Society. She also served on the Board of the Griffith Foundation for Insurance Education for approximately ten years and currently serves on the Board of Governors for the Injured Patients and Families Compensation Fund of the State of Wisconsin. Dr. Schmit has been a Fellow Researcher of the China Center for Insurance and Social Security Research, Peking University (CCISSR) since 2003.
Her work has been published extensively in insurance and legal journals, including the Journal of Risk and Insurance, Risk Management and Insurance Review, CPCU Journal, Journal of Insurance Regulation, and Marquette Law Review. In addition, Dr. Schmit is coauthor with Travis Pritchett, Helen Doerpinghaus and James Athearn of the textbook Risk Management and Insurance and is an associate editor of the Journal of Risk and Insurance. Previously she served on the editorial boards of the Risk Management and Insurance Review, the Journal of Insurance Regulation, and the CPCU Journal. Her area of expertise is the interaction of law and economics in an insurance and risk management context, primarily focused on the effects of tort law.
The program in risk management and insurance at the University of Wisconsin-Madison has existed since 1938 and currently is ranked second among all programs in the United States. The faculty have taken leadership positions in the field throughout this duration, including four prior Presidents of the American Risk and Insurance Association, and alumni who are major contributors to the industry, some as CEOs of insurance organizations, others as leading brokers, and still others as innovative risk managers.
