The Department of Economics has five teaching and research sections: political economy, microeconomics, macroeconomics, econometrics, and economic history and history of economic thoughts. They integrate theoretical, historical and empirical studies. Majors such as political economy, western economics, economic history and history of economic thoughts are designated ‘National Key Disciplines’. The Department of Economics currently offers 4 Master programs and 4 Ph.d programs. Among the 25 faculty members, 80% are professors and associate professors. There are also prominent scholars such as Mr. Wu Jinglian as adjunct professors and guest professors. |
Department of International Economics and Trade

The Department of International Economics and Trade was established in 1985 as a successor of the International Economics Major which was established in 1958. The department aims at training professionals with good understanding of economic theory, strong language skills, and solid knowledge of both international economic theory and practice to meet the needs of China’s further reform in the globalization era. Our graduates are able to conduct economic analysis and project planning in foreign-related sectors of government and financial institutions. They can engage in decision-making, consulting and managing in various foreign enterprises and multinational companies. They can also pursue a career in colleges, universities and research institutes.

The Department of Finance has strengths in student sources, courses, faculty members, teaching facilities and academic achievement. It makes efforts to cultivate professionals who are competent in finance and other fields, with solid economic and financial knowledge, practical working capability, strong language and computer skills, high morality and social adapting abilities. The following knowledge and capabilities should be achieved after four years’ of study. 1. Basic knowledge of financial theory, and familiarity with the cutting-edge developments in the discipline; 2. Solid foundation to deal with the operational tasks in banks, securities, investment and insurance; 3. Basic methods of information retrieval and material requisition, and academic researching potentials; 4. Good manner and professional ethics, understanding of the national financial strategies, policies and regulations.

Department of Risk Management and Insurance

Established in 1993, the Department of Risk Management and Insurance is one of the first five insurance departments approved by the Ministry of Education. Its history can be traced back to the insurance discipline ofPekingUniversityin 1912. With the PKU spirit of ‘patriotism, progress, democracy and science’ and the SEPKU spirit of ‘steering the economic development of society in order to benefit the livelihood of the people’ in mind, the department is dedicated to teaching, research and social services of insurance, risk management, actuarial and social welfare. It aims at cultivating outstanding professionals with ‘high quality, broad foundation and special skills’. It has and maintains extensive exchange and cooperation with many famous insurance and financial institutions as well as government departments and international academic organizations, which provides a wide platform for teaching, research and talent-cultivating. Its graduates are very competitive in the job market. They secure positions in renowned organizations of insurance, banking, securities, consulting and other industries. Some of them enter prominent universities and research institutes such as Harvard Business School and Wharton Business School . They can also work in governmental departments like the Insurance Regulatory Commission and the Ministry of Commerce. The Department of Public Finance aims at training the professionals with good economic theory foundation and solid knowledge of public finance, taxation and public economic policies. The graduates should acquire strong ability in research, management, and decision making, as well as skills in foreign languages and computer. With courses that integrate theory and practice, students should achieve the following knowledge and capabilities after four year study. 1. Basic knowledge of economic theory, familiarity with relevant finance and taxation system and practice, knowledge of the cuting-edge development of public finance; 2. Ability of pursuing further studies, or working in colleges and institutes for teaching and research of public policy and macroeconomic management; 3. Competence in conducting public economic research and policy making in the relevant governmental departments; 4. Capability in providing auditing, tax filing, and asset assessment services in accounting firms, law firms and other agencies; 5. Having the comprehensive quality to manage modern enterprises.
