Ph.D. in Risk Management and Insurance

The Ph.D. in Risk Management and Insurance is one of the Ph.D. programs in School of Economics, Peking University. The admission requirements and the application and admission process follow the document attached. The applicants who wish to apply for the program of Ph.D. in Risk Management and Insurance must apply to the School of Economics and must choose this program. The faculties of Department of Risk Management and Insurance will be involved in the tests and interviews.

 

Admission Requirements

for Ph.D. Programs in School of Economics 2017

In case of inconsistency, the Chinese version prevails.

 

The admission for Ph.D. programs in School of Economics follows “Application-Assessment Process”.

 

I. Applicant Qualification

1. The applicant should be of fine health and morality, and conform to laws and school regulations.

 

2. One of the three prerequisites should be met:

A. Already received Master or Ph.D. degree

B. Fresh graduate (should have received Master’s degree before application)

C. Having received Bachelor`s degree for at least 6 years (up to September 1st of the enrollment year). Applicants who meet prerequisite C are considered as having equivalent educational status with those who meet A/B. These applicants should have published at least two academic papers (as first author) on core international or domestic journals on the subject of the application or related fields. Those with a research achievement award (top five) at provincial or ministerial level (or above) related to the subject of application are also eligible. Proof material of the above achievements should be submitted together with the application.

 

3. The applicant’s health conditions meet the standard of Peking University’s entrance physical examination.

III. Documents to be Submitted

1. Ph.D. Application Registration Form. Please log on to official website of Peking University’s Graduate School Admission Office (http://admission.pku.edu.cn/bm) and apply online. Submit documents and print the registration form.

2. Hard copy of highest degree certificate. (Fresh graduates of Master’s degree should provide a proof letter from the graduate school from which they receive the degree. Degree certificates can be submitted after admission and enrollment is possible only after review. Applicants who receive their degrees overseas should provide degree authentication by the Overseas Student Service at the Ministry of Education.)

3. Hard copy of ID card.

4. Master’s degree thesis (fresh graduates can also submit thesis abstract and table of contents)

5. Official academic transcript from the university that the applicant graduates.

6. Personal Statement, including a draft of research project with a letter of motivation. (around 3,000 words). Suggested format can be downloaded from the application website. (http://grs.pku.edu.cn/zsxx/bszs/bobmxx/)

7. Recommendation letters from two professors or associate professors (or faculties with equivalent qualifications) for the applicant’s suitability for Ph.D. studies. Suggested format can be downloaded from application website. (http://grs.pku.edu.cn/zsxx/bszs/bobmxx/)

8. Evidence of linguistic proficiency (English). Details see below.

The applicant should have acquired at least one of the following proofs of English language proficiency in the past 3 years:

·            Passing Peking University’s English Proficiency Test for Ph.D. Applicants

·            TOEFL (iBT: a minimum total score of 90, CBT: a minimum total score of 220)

·            GRE (a minimum total score of 1200, new standard: 310)

·            GMAT (a minimum total score of 650)

·            CET-6 (a minimum total score of 580)

·            Passing TEF-4

·            IELTS Class A (minimum score 6.5)

·           Having received a degree from an institute in an English speaking country or region. The program language should be English.

9. One hard copy of academic paper, publication or original work results that can prove the applicant’s scholastic aptitude.

 

The applicant must prepare and submit documents according to the above requirements. The completeness of documents may affect the result of the application. The documents will not be returned to the applicant whether the applicant receives an offer or not. The applicant should check carefully whether he or she meets the program’s requirements. Applicants discovered to have committed irregularities such as submitting false documents would be serious processing according to regulations of the university (including disqualification or being struck off the school roll). The School of Economics’ deadline of document submission conforms with announcements published by Peking University’s Graduate School Admission Office. IV. Choosing a Program

The applicant chooses a program from the program catalog published by the Peking University Graduate School. (Webpage: http://grs.pku.edu.cn/zsxx/bszs/bozsjzjml/). Each applicant should choose ONE program. There is no need to specify the track and supervisor. Each applicant can only submit an application ONCE every year.

 

V. The Decision of the Program Committee

1. Preliminary screening.

The preliminary screening involves examination of the application documents and evaluation of the applicant’s research abilities.

The program committee will decide the list of applicants eligible for second-round test. The applicant’s academic transcript, Master’s degree thesis, English language proficiency, research work, publications, rewards, research proposal and recommendation letters will all be considered.

Applicants will be informed of the result of the preliminary screening in around March 10, 2017.


2. Tests

The tests will evaluate applicants’ academic abilities, English proficiency, critical thinking, writing ability, motivation, and morality.

The form of the tests: Balance selection based on results of written examination and interview.

Written examination will be a test on basic knowledge and abilities organized by the School of Economics. The test will cover basic knowledge of economic theories and methodologies of academic research in economics. There are NO reference books for the written examination.

The interview will test the applicant’s knowledge background, logical and critical thinking, creativeness, mastery level of research frontiers in the field of interest, and English proficiency.

The final score of the applicant = 50% × written examination score + 50% × interview score. Final decision of admission is based on this score. The applicant fails any one of the written exam or the interview cannot pass.

 

3. Time of the tests

March 15 ~ March 30, 2017. Specific time see the preliminary screening result announcement.

 

4. Special Attention for applicants with equivalent education status

Applicants who meet prerequisite C in section I should take additional tests on philosophy and two core courses of professional-oriented master program. The three additional tests are all written tests lasting for two hours, with total scores of 100. These scores will NOT constitute the final score of an applicant. An applicant is considered to pass the additional tests only if he or she passes all three additional tests. Applicants who fail to sit the tests or fail in the tests will not be admitted.

 

VI. Penalty of Irregularities

Applicants found to have committed irregularities such as submitting false documents would be serious processing according to regulations of the university (disqualification or being struck off the school roll). Violators will also be under the investigation of judicial authorities.

 

VII. Admission Procedure

The admission procedure follows the principle of “Open, Fair, and Equitable” and “Preferential Enrollment”. We believe that it is better to leave a deficiency uncovered than to have it covered without discretion.

Admission results will be decided by the decision committee and posted online for public scrutiny. The applicant’s evaluation results of preliminary screening and tests are effective ONLY for this year’s application. Public scrutiny will last for ten working days.

Enrollment notices will be sent to applicants who pass the public scrutiny around 15 June, 2017.

 

VIII. Information Publicity and Scrutiny

Details of decision procedure, the list of applicants who are eligible for tests and the admission list will all be posted on the webpage of School of Economics. The whole decision procedure is under the direction of the university’s Ph.D. Application Scrutiny Committee.
