The Harmony of Civilizations and Prosperity for All

Tradition and Modernity, Transition and Transformation

The Economic Sub-forum of 2011 Beijing Forum, on the theme Economic Growth in the Context of Globalization: Opportunities, Challenges and Perspectives inaugurated at Diao Yu Tai State Guest House on 4th November. The distinguished guests attended this forum were those who had made great achievements in economy, society, politics and other important areas. The scholars discussed warmly on economic globalization, regional integration, current economic situation of China and sustainable development etc.

Getting rid of the financial crisis to achieve economic growth was one of the most attractive issues at the forum. Taking China , Japan , America and European Union for examples, many experts talked about the high relevance of world economy under the background of globalization as well as the financial crisis which has spread throughout the world. In the tide of the contemporary economy trend of integration, how to enhance the economic growth is the core concern of every country. Mr. Woo Jaejoon from IMF referred the relationship between the public debt and economic growth, and he illustrated the impacts on economic perspective of the scale of public debt. This is the problem many countries are facing. Then questions were raised: how to keep the stabilization of the economy; how to protect the right of the common people at the time that international exchange rate is changing from time to time, and various financial derivatives such as stocks and security etc. have emerged.

To solve these problems, cooperation has become imperative tendency. Many scholars took the East Asia for example to conduct their researches on economy, and compared the structure and features of intellectual excellence between east and west, hoping to capture the culture foundation of the world cooperation. Professor Reginald Little hurled the concern to Confucianism, and from this aspect, he demonstrated the perspective of the current global economic development and the human pursuit of happy life and health, meanwhile, he posed profound query on the value and significance of contemporary mainstream civilization of the world.

As a gigantic country of large population and economy, the social problems always occur with the economic problems in China. After 30 years` reform and open up, China has much more problems on exchange rate, trade, domestic demanding and so on, and the concern about environment, housing, social equality, and average longevity is becoming more and more severe as well. All of these are flooding out now, and many experts gave their own ideas on the issues. Professor James Mirrlees, the 1996 Nobel Laureate in Economics, delivered his speech on Optimal Saving, Investment and Growth in Open Economics, he pointed out that China should change from lender to borrow: grow faster for a time, then grow much slowly. Can economy and society develop at the same step? Can we keep a sustainable development? Can common people share the development of economy? These topics were debated at the forum, and were the final regression of view of points from the scholars.

The Beijing Forum gave the guests from all over the world a great opportunity to communicate, in the era, globalization, cooperation, sustainable development have become the consensus of people from all over the world, in this case, this forum had a significant meaning for global communication and cooperation.
