EU Ambassador to China Talked about China-EU Economic Relations
2017-12-02

On December 1, the series lectures on "China`s economy in the eyes of foreign ambassadors to China" held in SEPKU as the celebration of the 105th anniversary. Mr. Hans Dietmar Schweisgut, the EU ambassador to China delivered a speech entitled "Prospects for the China-EU Economic Relations".

At the beginning of the speech, Prof. Sun Qixiang, Dean of SEPKU, welcomed Ambassador Hans Dietmar Schweisgut and the teachers and students both inside and outside the school. Dean Sun mentioned that the EU is an important economic cooperative partner of China. Since the establishment of formal diplomatic relations between China and the European Community 42 years ago, both sides have maintained good cooperative relations. Although China and the EU experienced various setbacks and hardships in the past few days, they have still made brilliant achievements. This is inextricably linked with the long-term positive efforts made by both sides to promote the healthy development of two-way trade and investment. Dean Sun said she hopes China and Europe will step up their communication and cooperation and work hand in hand to make contributions to the peaceful development of Europe and Asia and the world.

Subsequently, Ambassador Hans Dietmar Schweisgut delivered a keynote speech. He fully expressed his recognition and support for the concept of win-win China`s economic growth and China-EU cooperation mentioned by Dean Sun. The Ambassador`s speech is divided into the impact of the development of the world economic situation on China-EU relations, the relationship between economy and trade, and the opportunities and challenges that all countries in the world face. In his speech, the Ambassador introduced in detail the development of the economy in both China and the EU in recent years. He pointed out that after the financial crisis in 2008, although the European economy was gradually recovering, the unemployment rate dropped and the import and export trade increased, it still faced regional conflicts and terrorism, refugee flows, poverty and other risks and challenges. At present, countries in Europe are trying various solutions to solve the problem together. In order to achieve the steady economic development, both China and the EU must work together with each other and increase mutual investment, open up the market and make contributions to creating a more equitable and healthy international environment. As General Secretary Xi Jinping said, China`s trade market opening is a favorable move for both sides. We should accelerate market reforms, overcome differences and difficulties, increase international investment and achieve win-win outcomes.

After the speech, the teachers and students asked questions on the European integration prospects, economic globalization, multilateral trade and bilateral trade, the wave of refugees in Europe, the exchanges and cooperation between China and EU, international financial stability and international investment. While talking about the impact of the European refugee wave on the European economy and society, the Ambassador stressed in particular that to solve the problem of refugees is not enough for one or two countries or regions alone. The conflict between state sovereignty and humanitarian concern must be balanced under the guidance of international law.

Finally, Dean Sun Qixiang presented to the Ambassador a Certificate of Honor for the series lecture of "The Chinese Economy in the Eyes of Foreign Ambassadors to China".
