The 2nd Peking University Economic Science Doctorate Symposiumwas successfully held

  On May 15, 2021, the 2nd Peking University Economic Science Doctorate symposium, co-sponsored by School of Economics at Peking University, Economic Science editorial office and Little Economist magazine, was successfully held. The theme of this symposium is "Challenges and Way Out for Economic Research in the Big Data Era". The symposium consists of an opening speech in the morning, a keynote speech and four parallel sub-forums in the afternoon. Nearly a hundred teachers and students from universities at home and abroad participated in this symposium.

  In the main offline symposium in the morning, Wang Dawei, Assistant General Manager of People's Online, Vice Chairman of People's Financial Services, Chief Engineer of People's Cloud, Dean of People's Chain Research Institute and Chen Songqian, Chair Professor of Peking University, Founding Director of Peking University Statistics Science Center delivered a keynote speech as special guests. Professor Dong Zhiyong, Dean of the School of Economics at Peking University and Editor-in-Chief of Economic Science, delivered the opening speech.

  Dong Zhiyong expressed his warm congratulations in his speech. He first reviewed the first  Peking University Economic Science Doctorate Symposium in 2020, and looked forward to exchanging academic ideas and to promoting common progress in the symposium. He emphasized that this symposium focused on "big data", involving the technical foundation and innovation behind big data, and the impact of big data on economic development. He encouraged the participating doctoral students to explore further on economics in the era of big data.

  In the keynote speech session, Wang Dawei gave a speech on the theme of "Media on the Cloud and Services on the Blockchain". He started from the common news reading scenes in people's lives, summarized the characteristics and ways of people receiving information in the era of big data, and introduced the relevant policies of the central government on promoting the development of integrated media and blockchain technology in recent years. 

  In addition, Wang Dawei introduced the industry-finance service platform that provides online intelligent financial services for small, medium and micro enterprises, and the big data risk control service that provides intelligent risk control services for governments, enterprises, and financial institutions.

  Chen Songqi gave a lecture on "Statistical Analysis and Data Experiments in the Atmospheric Environment". Starting from the ecological environment monitoring network in the era of big data, he introduced to the students that with the current highly developed meteorological observatories, satellites and remote sensing systems, there are abundant environment-related data, which provides us with statistical analysis of the atmospheric environment. Later, Chen Songqi further elaborated on some mathematical statistical methods for air pollution measurement. Finally, he emphasized that economic research can learn from some research paradigms and statistical methods commonly used in geoscience research.

  In the on-site communication session after the speech, students enthusiastically asked questions about the role of "People's Cloud" in breaking down information barriers, how the standardized data of "People's Cloud" can be combined with academic research, how to identify news and public opinion trends under big data, how to reasonably estimate the trend change of long-term meteorological data, the comparison and conversion of meteorological evaluation indicators between China and the United States, etc. and had an in-depth exchange with the two guests.

  The online parallel sub-forums in the afternoon were divided into four sessions. 13 doctoral students and 3 undergraduates from domestic universities such as Peking University, Xi’an Jiaotong University, Shandong University, Xiamen University and overseas universities such as Deakin University introduced their Research results. Li Bo, Assistant Professor of Department of Economics at SEPKU, Wang Xi, Assistant Professor of the Department of Finance at SEPKU Wang Yaojing, Assistant Professor of Department of Public Finance,and Yuan Ye, Assistant Professor of Department of Economics, respectively commented on the presented papers.

  The Peking University Economics Doctorate Symposium aims to promote academic exchanges among doctoral students from various economics and management schools at home and abroad, and to provide a platform for display and publication for doctoral students interested in academic research, so as to better contribute to China's new academic growth in economics. The Symposium took the form of a combination of online and offline, which not only ensured the effect of academic exchanges but also met the requirements of epidemic prevention and control. Thanks to all the guests, paper authors, audiences and staff of the organizing committee for their joint support. Let us look forward to the growth of China's new generation of economists!
