主讲人简介:
Ming Gu is an Assistant Professor of Applied Economics in the Division of Social Sciences and an affiliate of Global Health Research Center and Center for the Study of Contemporary China at Duke Kunshan University. She earned a B.A. in economics at the University of California, Berkeley, and a Ph.D. in economics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA). Prior to relocating to China, she was a senior consultant at a Los Angele-based economics consulting firm, a research specialist at the Industrial Relations Section at Princeton University, and a PhD intern at the Department of Economics and Social Affairs at the United Nations Headquarters. While Dr. Gu’s research interests encompass health economics, education economics, labor economics and political economy, the overarching goal is to investigate the process of preference formation globally. Understanding which factors affect people’s attitudes and economic behaviors will enable researchers to better explain socioeconomic disparity, a universal challenge faced by many economies. Since joining DKU, she has been awarded a “Shuangchuang Prestigious Ph.D.” Award by Jiangsu Province, China, and have participated in a project funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
摘要:
COVID-19 is more likely to cause serious medical consequences among the elderly. Previous studies have shown that intergenerational transmission plays a key role in COVID-19-related infection and fatality. This paper utilized two large-scale multinational surveys to uncover the importance of family ties in infection prevention among 93 countries. We measured country-level family ties with emphasis on respondents’ view of their parents using the World Values Survey, and elicited individual health behavior attitudes from a panel study conducted each month started in the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic between March 2020 and July 2021. We find that in countries and regions with stronger family ties, people show more willingness for non-pharmaceutical interventions and vaccines; moreover, young people are more supportive of mandatory vaccination. The effect of family ties was especially salient before COVID-19 vaccines became available and was persistent before the global vaccination coverage reached 25%. Our results are robust across several specifications.

摘要:
As the largest soybean importing country, this study analyzes the migration effect of soybean import shock in China. Exploiting the main soybean producing areas, the three northeastern provinces in China as our sample and using population Census data, we constructed prefecture-level soybean import shock and individual level migration variables. We found a large out of migration effect caused by soybean import shock: 13% of the rural migration of northeastern regions over 2001-2015 can be explained by the soybean import shock. The shock reduces (increases) soybean planting (land renting) activities, leading rural residents to seek opportunities in other more developed regions mainly by becoming migrant workers. Such migration-to-elude effect is largely driven by low educated and mature farmers.

摘要:
We compile a novel and complete data set of over 2800 high-ranked Kuomintang military officers on whom an official rank of general or colonel was conferred by the Nationalist government in 1936 and use historical archives and books to recover their career paths during the War of Resistance against Japan from 1937 to 1945. We examine factors motivating officers’ defection to the Japanese invaders or their collaborationists. This research provides many implications extended to cases of officers moving to the other side in the following Chinese Civil War, which we are also investigating.
