Xuezhu Shi is an Assistant Professor at the School of Insurance, University of International Business and Economics (UIBE). She received her Ph.D. in Economics from the London School of Economics and Political Science. Her research interests include health and development economics, labor economics, and social security in China. Her articles have been published in international journals such as Labour Economics, and she received a grant from the Young Scientists Fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China.
摘要：
This paper examines the spillover effects of hospital violence on medical expenditures. While the supply-side literature points to defensive medicine (implying cost increases), we document a dominant, opposing demand-side channel. Using a generalized difference-in-differences framework, we find that hospital violence reduces total medical spending. This reduction is driven by changes in patient behavior: individuals, particularly children and healthier individuals, delay or forego care for non-urgent conditions. We explore eroded trust as the underlying mechanism of patient avoidance. Despite the reduction in utilization, we find no evidence of persistent adverse health outcomes, confirming the effects are concentrated in discretionary healthcare decisions.

摘要：
We study the uneven impacts of reducing mobility barriers arising from land market frictions by leveraging two major land reforms that strengthen land rental rights in China. Using a large language model–based text analysis to capture the reforms’ spatial and temporal rollout, we construct a novel county-level reform index. Combining this index with a large panel dataset, we show that the reforms shift rural women out of agriculture more than men and reduce urban women’s employment and wage income relative to men. We embed the reform index into a two-sector model with household-level employment decisions. The interactions between land-market frictions and gender roles in market and home production drive these uneven impacts. Counterfactual analyses suggest that reducing these frictions significantly affects female labor allocation and agricultural productivity.

Eik Swee is Associate Professor of Economics at the University of Melbourne. He is an applied microeconomist working in the areas of public, political, and development economics. Much of his work examines the causes and consequences of institutional failure, with a particular focus on developing countries. His research spans multiple fields and disciplines (economics, political science, and sociology), and draws on different data sources (observational, spatial, archival, web scraped) to answer policy-relevant questions.
摘要：
We study how anti-fascist opposition during Mussolini’s dictatorship affects post-war support for right-wing parties in Italy. We construct a measure of anti-fascism from the universe of recorded opponents, and use newly digitized historical data to resolve simultaneity between the supply of opposition and the demand for repression, lever-aging the random assignment of judges to the Special Tribunal for the Defense of the State. Stronger local opposition leads to weaker support for right-wing parties decades later. Our model generates predictions about underlying mechanisms, tested using data on collective memorialization and parental voting behavior. The main driver is social transmission of political preferences.
