摘要：
Recidivism remains high worldwide. Lack of work is widely viewed as a leading cause, yet programs that help former prisoners find jobs have had limited success. We argue that one reason is timing: reoffending risk peaks in the days after release, long before a conventional job delivers its first paycheck. To study this margin, we link court records on millions of releases in China to the staggered entry of food-delivery platforms across counties. We find that access to gig work substantially reduces recidivism and that most of the effect reflects when earnings arrive. When platforms moved riders from monthly to same-day pay for the same delivery work, the effect grew severalfold, almost entirely in the first month after release and among offenders with no financial buffer. In that window, even large wage increases do not substitute for immediate pay. The effect is absent for ride-hailing, which requires a license and a vehicle, and disappears once cities mandate criminal background checks for riders. Because platform entry requires no public spending, it averts reoffending far more cheaply than existing reentry programs. Our results suggest that how quickly work pays matters as much as whether work is available.

摘要：
We develop a multi-country, multi-sector general equilibrium model to study how industrial robot adoption and trade liberalization jointly affect the skill premium. The model combines a Roy–Fréchet labor supply structure with a production technology in which industrial robots interact asymmetrically with skilled and unskilled labor. Counterfactual analyses show that robot adoption raise the skill premium primarily through within-sector factor-usage adjustment, whereas trade liberalization has a small average effect but generates substantial cross-country heterogeneity through sectoral output reallocation. Although the joint effect is nearly additive on average, the interaction effect differs markedly in sign and magnitude across countries. We show that this heterogeneity is governed by the alignment between trade-induced sectoral reallocation and robot-induced skill bias. These findings highlight that the distributional consequences of automation in open economies depend not only on technology shocks, but also on the sectoral specialization patterns induced by globalization.
